Note to Schools
and Colleges

We have all been affected by the new safety guidelines and recommendations due to Covid-19. As a result, many schools are struggling to navigate the new terrain of merging traditional teaching practices, new technologies and fluctuating guidelines for health measures. As a professional musician for many years, I understand the significance of music’s influence. As a keyboard and woodwind instructor, I respect the need to provide engaging, interactive and creative presentations.

Book 1: Beginners 6+

Book 1 is designed for beginner students, ages six and older, interested in learning the fundamentals of playing the keyboard by ear. This text begins by introducing the layout of any keyboard where the student learns the names of the notes and memorizes a simple chord pattern in the key of F major. These eight chords are turned into songs in various styles of music. Each of the following lessons adds a useful technique that is used to successfully play several songs. In addition to learning over 30 inspirational songs and hymns, many valuable traditional Gospel techniques are introduced throughout.

Book 2: Advanced

Book 2 introduces more advanced improvisational techniques including the number system in music in all 12 major keys. The text also introduces beginner, intermediate, and advanced chords voicings for each number of the major scales along with two of the most commonly used chord patterns in several styles of music. Additionally, you can learn left-hand voicings, improvisational licks using the pentatonic scale, harmonic, blues, and super locrian scales, four different 2-5-1 voicings, over 20 songs, and many other valuable techniques used in keyboard improvisation.

Book 3: Play by ear

Book 3 begins with a very simple beginner method of learning to play the keyboard by ear in the key of C Major. The introduction is similar to book one where the student learns the layout of any keyboard, learns all the note names, and memorize a few simple chord patterns. This text progresses to many of the chord patterns used to play familiar styles of music including R&B, country, and praise & worship music that uses simple chord patterns. When these chord patterns are mastered they provide an excellent method for beginners to hear and play the keyboard by ear. The first 10 songs reveal a common set of chords among many popular styles.

Book 4: Play Songs by Ear

Songs for piano is a text for musicians who read music well but still require assistance on how to begin to hear and play the keyboard by ear. The text begins with the explanation of the number system in the key of F Major. Each scale degree in the left-hand is assigned a number and an accompanying triad in the right hand. These chords are memorized and used to play several popular songs.
